Twojans Lose Despite Leadoff Home Run
The first game of the double header started off with a bang as Tom Wrightson hit a leadoff opposite field home run over the right field fence. However that was all the damage the Twojans would manage in the top of the first. The Twojans sent veteran right hander Jeff Ocenasek out to the hill to start the game. After walking the first two batters, Ocenasek was able to recover by picking off a runner at second, and then retiring the next two batters to retire the side. The Twojans would finish the inning with a 1-0 lead.
The second inning saw the Twojans unable to put any runs across despite a single by catcher Dan Groves. In the bottom half of the second Ocenasek was able to strike out the first batter, but Groves dropped a 12-6 curveball and threw it into the runners back to get him on board without an out. The next batter singled, which was followed by a walk. With the bases loaded Ocenasek got the next batter to ground to third, and the third baseman made a wide throw to home which brought the catcher off the bag to bring in a run. With a situation where there should have been two outs, there was no outs, and the Bladerunners then took advantage by singling back to back to bring in two more runs. Ocenasek then got the next batter to pop up for an out, followed by another fly out to left. After that the next two batters got on board on errors by the shortstop and centerfielder, the last batter grounded out to third. The errors in the field ended up costing the Twojans 5 more runs than would have been scored, with 7 coming across in the inning for the Bladerunners with the score standing at 7-1 Bladerunners.
The top of the third inning saw the Twojans claw back as James Hobson walked and then came into score on several wild pitches, which also lead to Ed Wrightson being walked. Scott Gray then doubled in another run but that was all the Twojans would manage for the inning. The bottom of the frame saw the Bladerunners earn their runs with their bats this time, starting off with back to back singles, followed by a double to bring in a run. That was followed by a groundout, which would bring in another run. With a runner on third and one out, the next batter grounded to third and was gunned out at the plate by third baseman Chris Pittard. With two outs and a runner on, the next two batters doubled, followed by a single and a walk before Ocenasek was able to get the last batter to ground out. The Bladerunners added five earned runs this time around and the score stood at 12-1 in their favour.
The following two innings saw the batters quieted for both sides. The Bladerunners brought in a reliever who shut the Twojans down despite a single by James Hobson. Ocenasek stayed on the mound the entire game and was able to keep the Bladerunners to just one more run. The game finished with a score of 13-3.
Ocenasek took the loss, throwing 98 pitches with 10 hits, 1 strike out, and 6 walks allowing 8 earned runs. Offensive standouts for the Twojans were Tom Wrightson with his leadoff home run, and Scott Gray who went 1-3, with an RBI.
